Ecco Jr., a spin-off of the popular Ecco the Dolphin series, was first released on the Sega Genesis in 1995. Since then, it has made its way to various platforms, including the PlayStation 2 and PSP as part of the Sega Genesis Collection. In addition, the game was also released on the Wii's Virtual Console in Japan in November 2007, marking its debut in this region.

A unique feature of Ecco Jr. is its inclusion of a 'Parent's Menu', which provides parents with information about real dolphins, as well as settings for difficulty level and level selection. The game also features a password system, although all passwords are conveniently included in the instruction manual.

Players can switch between characters at any time, and two new playable characters were introduced in this version: Tara the baby orca and Kitnee the young Atlantic dolphin. Unlike other Ecco games, there are no enemies to attack the player character, and the game's focus is on using the player's abilities to solve simple puzzles and problems.

The gameplay is controlled similarly to other Ecco games, with the player guiding a younger version of Ecco through various tasks such as herding seahorses, swimming through rings, and finding lost balls for sea lions. The goal is to help Ecco reach the Big Blue, completing these tasks along the way.

Ecco Jr. was also released on cartridge in Australia, making it the only PAL version available on this format. Additionally, a modified port of the game called Ecco Jr. was available on the Sega Pico, providing players with an even wider range of options to enjoy this fun and educational game.
